Tesla in Colorado Springs: Birthplace of Big Ideas

In 1899, Nikola Tesla chose Colorado Springs as the testing ground for his boldest ideas. Drawn by the region’s high altitude, dry air, and frequent lightning storms, he built a massive experimental lab on Knob Hill—complete with a 142-foot mast and a powerful magnifying transmitter capable of generating artificial lightning over 100 feet long.

During his time here, Tesla proved key concepts:

  • Wireless power transmission — lighting bulbs without wires.

  • Earth resonance — detecting what he believed were stationary electrical waves in the Earth.

  • High-voltage discharge control — mastering artificial lightning.

He believed the Earth itself could carry power like a giant conductor, and Colorado Springs gave him the space to test that theory.

Tesla left the city confident he could scale up his vision. Back in New York, he began building the Wardenclyffe Tower, named after landowner James Warden, to create a global wireless energy and communication system—built on the very principles he explored under Pikes Peak’s skies.
